Chapter 5

After spending the weekend at her sister’s house, BaoBei went back to school. Seeing her three roommates, as she returned to the dorm, BaoBei finally realised that another week of school is about to start!

In the dorms, Fang Jie was facing the mirror as she did her make-up, rushing to go meet her boyfriend.

XiaoXi was standing on the balcony, playing with her bangs. She leaned on the railings as she complained, “I should get a new haircut. I almost broke my neck trying to flick my bangs.”

JiaHui shook her head as she tidied up her books. “Nowadays, salons don’t really act like salons. If they aren’t prattling on endlessly whilst cutting your hair, then they would be promoting their products. And sometimes even pushing you to dye your hair. The interior design makes you feel like you’ve entered some kind of host club. The hair washers are all punks while the hair stylists are all gay. Moreover, their names are always either Andy, Tony or Eric. But the scariest part is that they create some weird ass hairstyles and insist that it’s fashion.”

“You said BaoBei is blunt, but you’re pretty blunt as well. ” Fang Jie said as she laughed.

“You flatter me.” It was BaoBei who replied.

Fang Jie finished her make-up and drifted away.

JiaHui wanted to read some books at the library and also drifted away.

In the end, only XiaoXi and BaoBei were left.

BaoBei opened her wardrobe cabinet and put away her cleaned clothes. Seeing Shi XiaoXi opening Weibo and then taking out a pair of scissors to cut her hair afterwards, BaoBei thought to herself that she’d trick Shi XiaoXi.

“XiaoXi.”

“Hm?”

“I wanna ask you something.”

“Sure!” XiaoXi boldly replied.

“Three women bought a banana each. Each of them ate it in a different way. One of them licked it, the other one bit it and the last one sucked it. Which one of these women is married?”

Even though the content sounded dirty, Baobei asked it with a magnanimous and righteous attitude.

XiaoXi pouted her lips a bit before answering, “The one that sucked.”

BaoBei turned her head and stared at XiaoXi, “It should be the one with a ring on her left ring finger.”

XiaoXi fell into a daze.

“Shi XiaoXi, you’re so perverted.” BaoBei continued after a beat, “But I like the way you think.”

Ten seconds later, a shriek could be heard inside dorm room 409. Afterwards, the door was opened as Shi XiaoXi ran out of the room with her face covered, in tears and screaming, “This elder sis has been mislead! This elder sis has been mislead!”

School has been going on for a month already. The Law of Obligations course was one of the last ones to start. Due to that, the other two in the dorm room have been complaining non-stop. How could their hearts stay calm as they carried their books to their electives, while BaoBei and XiaoXi holed up in the dorm room, going online due to the lecturer’s schedule change?

BaoBei’s other elective course was the Literature Department’s Three Kingdom Appreciation [1] class. BaoBei thought, that with her memorisation of the Three Kingdoms, on account of it always being in novels and TV shows, that it would be an easy class. Because of BaoBei’s theory, Shi XiaoXi and Fang Jie, the lazy wretches, also decided to apply for the class.

Because the male lecturer was the short type, not even two classes later, the people attending the class had already reduced to half.

Today, the lecturer was explaining and introducing the three kingdoms in the Three Kingdoms. Academically, the lecturer obviously understood more about the topic, but for the students who had played a lot of games and read a lot of novels, the legends were far more exciting and interesting. So why would they listen to the lecturer’s boring and dull explanation? In fact, they would rather raise their hands and tell the teachers about their understanding of the Three Kingdom, rescuing the lecturer’s world views.

At the end of the class, the lecturer wanted to ask a student to summarise the Three Kingdoms in one sentence.

You see, although everyone was physically in the classroom however mentally, everyone was gone. Like Fang Jie, who was texting, or Shi XiaoXi, who was playing mobile games or BaoBei, who was daydreaming.

Who knew that when the teacher called out a number, they would be shot!

BaoBei stood up.

The lecturer looked at the student log. “An external student. Are you interested in the Three Kingdom?”

A pretty lady, naturally became the centre of attention.

BaoBei shook her head.

“I’m more interested in the course credits.”

The class immediately laughed. This sentence, how is it not what everyone was thinking?

The lecturer blanked for a bit, and laughed as well. “Honest to the point of wounding people.”

“Xia BaoBei of the Law Department, please use one sentence to summarise the three kingdoms.” The lecturer went back to the main point and asked the question.

BaoBei pursed her lips.

“You want my honest opinion?”

“I called you up, you think I wanted to play around?” The lecturer frowned.

“Eastern Wu likes lolis, Cao Wei likes other people’s wife, Shu Han are all gay. [2]” BaoBei’s voice was clear and distinct. For a while, the whole lecture theatre was so quiet that you could hear everyone’s breath clearly.

BaoBei looked around for a bit and sat, not even waiting for the lecturer to reply.

This wasn’t actually wrong. From another perspective, this was actually rather accurate. It’s just that the lecturer’s face was a bit indescribable.

But after thinking about her course credit, BaoBei decided she didn’t want to retake the course or do any makeup exams. And so she stood up again. With an extremely calm and serious demeanour, she said, “The power under the heavens, that which is long divided must unify, and that which is long unified must divide [3]. In regards to the three kingdoms, The Lord chooses its servant, and the servant also chooses its Lord, this was the way of the people throughout eternity. For me, Cao Cao seemed like a formidable and ruthless person during troubled times, whereas Liu Bei was a scoundrel. It could also be understood as, kindness to beauties, a hero’s burial mound.”

After she finished talking, she added, “More than one sentence, keep the change.”

In the end, she sat down.

After the class, on the way back to the dorm, Shi XiaoXi was still laughing.

“BaoBei, I think you will be very famous.”

BaoBei shot her a glance and ignored her.

“Xia BaoBei, I must say, you’re so amusing.” Fang Jie laughed as well.

“Before, this elder was a very normal person. Becoming this kind of person, was all because I wanted to match you guys. In this world, those who look at you two are plenty, but those who try to match you are little. Please cherish this person who accompanies you two – me.” BaoBei scolded the two who used her as a joke as she put one of her hands on XiaoXi’s shoulder and her finger pointing at her own nose, her waist bent.

“Oh god! I’ve been mislead again!” XiaoXi looked at Fang Jie with indignation.

Passing by the Business Department, a white BMW M5 slowly sailed passed them. Shi XiaoXi immediately changed from indignation to excitement, whistling towards the back of the car, pretending to be a hoodlum.

“Another rich kid [4].” Fang Jie curled her lip. Ever since she moved to Beijing, she had only become more resentful.

“I think it’s pretty good.” BaoBei laughed. “By driving slowly at school, if there’s a water puddle it won’t just glide over. Even if it’s a rich kid, it’s a good rich kid.”

“Oh my God!” Shi XiaoXi suddenly cried out in alarm, hastily hiding behind BaoBei and Fang Jie.

They glanced over and saw that the M5 had stopped, and it was even reversing towards them.

“Shi XiaoXi, you alone are responsible for what you have done!” Fang Jie said in a low voice.

“Whether we really are sisters will be proven this time! Substitute this elder to carry responsibility!”

In the end, BaoBei was pushed to the very front.

The car stopped right beside them, the car window slowly fell.

“Hi.” Without them noticing, a hand was raised as someone greeted them. Suddenly, BaoBei wanted to die.

If it wasn’t the Mr. Jiang MoXiu who ate dinner with her for two days consecutively last week at her sister’s place!

“Hi, BaoBei.” Jiang MoXiu lightly smiled. Under the street light, his expression seemed so concentrated, a slight smile in his eyes, so deep, so beautiful.

BaoBei heard someone draw in a huge breathe behind her, and then she heard a choking sound – Shi XiaoXi had choked on air.

It seems like she was more calm and collected at the face of a beauty. BaoBei felt very satisfied.

“Why are you here?” BaoBei said as she started to act cute.

“Hm. I’m here to do a little something. How about you?” Jiang MoXiu opened the door. He managed to turn a simple act of opening the door into a graceful scene. This man was so tall. With both his hands in his pockets, he stared at BaoBei. BaoBei had to look up to face him.

“Class just ended. We’re on our way back to the dorms.” BaoBei started to feel awkward.

“Let me send you guys then.” Even though the words sounded like mere courtesy, Jiang MoXiu had already made his way to open the front passenger seat for them. This action made them unable to reject his offer.

“Oh.” BaoBei also decided not to be courteous. In her heart, she was thinking, letting you freeload for two days, letting you become my chauffeur is already a cheap offer.

After exchanging a glance with Shi XiaoXi and Fang Jie, the two of them hurriedly opened the back door and entered. What a joke! The distance to the dorm wasn’t small, if there was a free ride, who would reject it?

In the short few minute journey, Jiang MoXiu quietly drove. They exchanged a few short pleasantries for a while but it was only on trifle things. It was quiet but not awkward. Inside the car, a soft yellow light radiated while the heater was warm, it made them feel very comfortable.

At the dorm doors, Shi XiaoXi and Fang Jie shamelessly called out and escaped first, leaving BaoBei alone to thank him.

“You don’t have to be courteous with me.” Jiang MoXiu smiled.

BaoBei also smiled along, then she lowered her head and quietened. She was thinking of what to say before leaving. BaoBei felt that this man was a bit atrocious. A simple-minded person like her, if she was thrown to a group of strangers, she could still end up laughing with them. However, it was only with him that she felt a bit reserved.

“BaoBei.”

“Hm?” She raised her head to look up t him.

“You really don’t remember me?”

“Huh?” BaoBei blanked.

Jiang MoXiu sighed.

“My name is Jiang MoXiu. I have lived in Boston since I was a kid.” Looking at BaoBei’s eyes that became clearer and brighter, Jiang MoXiu raised his brows and nodded. “Boston.”

[1] So here they used the word “Three Kingdom”, which points to either Records of The Three Kingdom, a historical record of what actually happened during the Three Kingdom’s period in China, or Romance of the Three Kingdom, a historical novel that is part historical, part mythical, part legend and based on the Records of The Three Kingdom.

I assume it is the latter than the former because they are in the Literature Department rather than the History Department. The Romance of The Three Kingdom is one of the Four Great Classical Novel in Chinese Literature.

[2] According to this site I found, apparently, it was said that Eastern Wu likes lolis (as in underaged girls) because Zhang Cheng (who is Zhang Zhao’s son) married his best friend (who’s just 4 years older than him)’s daughter. Lu Yu also married Zhang Bai when she was only 12 years old. The Two Qiaos (DaQiao and XiaoQiao) were also always depicted as lolis in games. Sun ShangXiang also married Liu Bei who is 30+ years older than her.

Cao Wei on the other hand had CaoCao who had 3 wives whom were other people’s wives.

Shu Han had Liu Bei who always claimed that “wives were like clothes while brothers are like hands and feet”. There was also Guan Yu who killed his wife for fun( I think? not sure), Zhao Yun who refused to get married and Zhu GeLiang who married an ugly woman (no idea why this makes him gay tho).

[3] A literal translation of the famous idiom from Romance of The Three Kingdom that means, things are constantly changing.

[4] It actually wrote “second generation” here, as in referring to sons/daughters of rich people.
